Why Choose Virtual Therapy?

One of the common concerns I hear from my clients is how busy they are.  Virtual therapy helps you save time by skipping the drive to and from therapy and reduces time missed from work and personal commitments. Virtual therapy also means that you aren’t limited by the network of therapists physically present in your town or city. This is especially helpful for people who live in smaller communities and may be limited on options for in-person therapy providers.  Research shows that virtual therapy is as effective as in-person treatment, and many clients prefer it for the convenience.

How do I make the most of the session?

To help you benefit most from virtual therapy, you will need a quiet and private space free of interruptions. Having secure and reliable internet access as well as access to a device with both audio and video capabilities is required. It is also required by College of Alberta Psychologists that you are physically present in Alberta at the time of your session.

Most clients find it helpful to have a notebook or their notes app handy to jot down some key ideas that come up in the session. Taking a couple of minutes after the session to write down any thoughts or reflections can be helpful at reinforcing the main thoughts, feelings, and ideas that came up for you and help you use the ideas from therapy throughout the coming days.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required varies based on your goals and current circumstances.  Many clients begin noticing significant improvements within 3-5 sessions, and may have fully achieved their goal in 8-10 sessions.  We will discuss your goals and decide how many sessions you would benefit from, and work collaboratively in deciding  how often to meet.

Who is virtual services not recommended for?

Clients with limited access to technology or discomfort with video counselling platforms are encouraged to seek out in-person therapy providers in their community.  Certain client populations are better supported with in person therapeutic support. Clients experiencing acute psychiatric crisis are asked to seek out in person support in their community.
